Tommy Hilfiger House Par-tay

I believe my lack of blogging is evidence enough of the busy schedule provided by GDMA this past semester, but I was able to, at times, squeeze a few minutes here and there to sit on the couch to watch the Canucks play. And during an intermission, I was exposed to a Tommy Hilfiger commercial.

Now I’m not a fan of Tommy Hilfiger, nor am I their target audience but it’s safe to say the Tommy Hilfiger brand is recognizable. The colours; red, white, and blue; used in the brand is a clear sign of who they are targeting. If you were to browse to the corporate pages of Tommy Hilfiger’s website, it won’t take much for you to discover their brand values and vision.

The brand celebrates the essence of Classical American Cool and provides a refreshing twist to the preppy fashion genre.

Tommy Hilfiger uses common elements shared with the American flag to create the brand connection. But does the company’s brand value extend itself to its current marketing campaign?

Great Scott!

No, this post isn’t about Back to the Future, but have you ever wondered how the Internet looked like at its infancy? For example, can you remember small details of how Google was like before it became Google? Or before Facebook, even though it wasn’t that long ago, became incredibly popular? Well, let me introduce to you the DeLorean of the World Wide Web.

It’s called the Wayback Machine by Internet Archive. Although it is still in beta, this service (if you can call it that) takes snapshots of the Internet and essentially archives any changes that are made. It’s like one big crazy back up of the Internet. There are some flaws here and there, but majority of the links can be traversed as well. Crazy!

And We’re Off!

It’s been a while since I last posted something on this blog. Prior to the redesign (or partial redesign), I promised myself that I would keep posting through hell and high water. So here I am! Back once more!

The vacation that I took slowed down my design gears, but the cobwebs have been cleared and the dust gone. The first major project I have for this semester is quite an open-ended one. However, I had a good friend approach me as a client from a few months back and offered me an opportunity I could not pass up. Raymond Wong (the brand) will be my major project for this course.

From here on out, I’ll be posting progress updates and insights on branding Raymond Wong. I hope there will be lots of information and inspiration to share with the world.

NDP delays back-to-work bill for Canada Post

So the current situation in parliament is that the NDP is trying to delay the bill proposed by the Conservatives to force the union workers of Canada Post back to work.

I did some digging to try and find out why Canada Post is on strike and what terms are they asking for in their new agreement. Thanks to the internet, I came across this. The labour workers of Canada Post are “rejecting Canada Post’s offer of reducing the starting wage rate for new employees by 22 per cent and putting them in a two-tier benefit plan.” Fair enough. No one likes to take a pay cut. But this pay cut only applies to new employees.

Blockbuster closes business

I wonder how many people will miss Blockbuster when they close their video rental stores across Canada? I certainly won’t.

Ever since the Internet became a popular medium for accessing media, Blockbuster has slowly seen their bottom line shrink and shrink. It’s not like they haven’t had countless opportunities to restructure their business either. I think they still have a good opportunity to revive the video rental sector, but it can’t be done through brick and mortar anymore.

I’m sure everyone can agree that Netflix had the right idea with online video and TV show subscriptions. That’s what Blockbuster should have done when Netflix was still mailing out DVDs of movies to subscribers. But the past is the past and it cannot be changed.

And as for you Blockbuster, farewell.
